Red & Black PotteryThis stiking red glaze is achieved by adding a more minute amount of copper to specially formualted glaze. Thus its name: Copper Red. This type of color was first produced as glass in 1500 B.C. in ancient Egypt and latter in China as a glaze in 960 - 1260 A.D. Copper Red is a very difficult glaze to achieve. If conditions in the kiln are too oxidizing or too reducing, the color will be either turquoise or a dark purple. If it is too hot, it will be clear; too cool will be tomato red. The formula is very tricky as well. If the proportions of the ingredients are not right, the color will not be produced at all. The work sold here is functional stoneware. We designed it to be used and enjoyed. All of our pottery is microwave safe, oven proof, and dishwasher safe. We do have one caution with the red glaze. The surface of the red glaze is "softer" and more easily scratched than other glazes. Cutlery will not scratch it, but a rough surface, such as the bottom of another pot, can mar the surface. Care must be taken with plates and bowls when stacking them in a cupboard. |
